Mae Hong Son Loop: Three Days on a Harley Davidson in Thailand
The road to Mae Hong Son in North Thailand and a Harley Davidson a ride dreams are made of. The roads are new with endless curves varying from broad sweepers to tight switchbacks. Ride through lush forests, mountain valleys on excellent roads on this ride. The stretch of road to Mae Hong Son may leave you wanting to go back and “do it again.” There are more roads ahead, we will let you come back.
A few of those 1864 curves on the road to Pai. Those that love to ride will love this road. We traveled this road so many times these curves are like old friends.
Less than an hour's highway ride south of Chiang Mai city we turn west and up out of the valley. The road, lined with teak forest begins immediately to weave it's way up the hills with sweeping curves with an occasional tight turn to keep you focused. Straightaways are a thing of the past for the next three days sit back and enjoy the ride.
As we get higher up the mountains the roads just keep getting better. The stretch to Mae Hong son has recently been completely resurfaced. We'll arrive in Mae Sariang around lunch time. Mae Sariang is a regional center of activity for the surrounding area, the main road swings by the outskirts of town, we'll head
into town for a lunch break near the river.
Make it a light lunch, we've got about 185 kilometers to ride over a road that is never straight, always fun. We'll stop Khun Yuam on our way for a short break and a visit to the Thai - Japanese friendship museum, or you can grab a 30 - 40 baht ($0.90 - $1.10 US) plate of Thai food if want.

Mae Hong Son has plenty to keep you entertained at night. The night market, colorful and a few deal to be had, a few restaurants and bars along the river with outdoor seating offers an opportunity to people watch. The main drag through town has shops, restaurants and a bar or two. There's a few spots for a quiet beer or cool drink off the beaten path. Your guide is there to help.
Get some rest, though. 'They' say there are 1864 curves on the road to Pai from Mae Hong Son. With that many curves in 103 kilometers it's nice to have a few stops along the way. After breakfast at the hotel we'll get started with a visit to one of the out-of-the-way Paduang tribe villages, a boat ride on the river is available and worth your time.

Pai is one of the major destinations for travelers in North Thailand, you are sure to find something to interest you, your guide is always available for advice. There are souvenir shops, boot shops restaurants and night clubs in Pai. A Thai meal on the river is a great way to start your evening.
There are still more curves as you head down the mountain to the Highway where we'll turn north to Chiang Dao for a visit to the herbal medicine market and cave with religious Icons. A late, gourmet lunch at Chiang Dao Nest before the ride to Chiang Mai.

- Head south out of Chiang Mai turn west into the mountains to Mae Sariang for a break along the river.
- After a leisurely lunch, back on the road to Mae Hong Son
- Stop off in Khun Yuam for a brief visit to the Japanese – Thai Friendship museum and a cool drink.
- An evening at Mae Hong Son; a perfect end to the day's ride.
- We'll head out after a breakfast for Pai.
- Long-Neck tribal villages and a short river cruise.
- Arrive in Pai with enough time to explore the shops and scenery
- head down the mountain to Chiang Dao
- A late, gourmet lunch at Chiang Dao Nest
- Return to Chiang Mai
Make That Four Days!
We'll stop in Mae Sariang for a night in a hotel along the river. If you are up for a Thai experience ask the guide to take you to for an all you can eat “Moo Ga-ta” (cook it yourself barbecue, Thai- style). Or dine along the river on western or Thai food.
We'll explore a few interesting side trips between Mae Sariang and Mae Hong Son.
